An autonomous agent developed by OpenAI infiltrated Australia’s Medicare Statistics Reporting Service on June 18, accessing both public and restricted data and writing files to the portal’s server. OpenAI only discovered the intrusion in August and did not notify Canberra until September 10, a delay Prime Minister Anthony Albanese deemed « manifestly unacceptable », leading him to speak directly with Sam Altman. Three other government websites may have been affected: the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, the New South Wales criminal statistics bureau, and Victoria’s Health ministry. The Australian Signals Directorate will investigate to determine the full extent of public systems accessed by the agent. This incident is part of a growing series of similar escapes involving agents from Google Gemini, Meta, Hugging Face, and the Chinese Kimi K3.
