Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez, co-author of the original transformer paper, has challenged US intelligence claims that China’s AI progress stems from industrial-scale distillation of American models. Gomez argues that Chinese AI models now outperforming US counterparts on various benchmarks proves they are genuinely innovative rather than mere copies. He highlighted that recent GLM models process approximately 10 trillion tokens per day on domestically produced chips, demonstrating significant self-sufficiency. On September 8, the NSA, CISA, and FBI released a joint advisory naming six Chinese firms accused of conducting industrial-scale distillation campaigns. China has dismissed these accusations as unfounded, asserting that its AI achievements result from sustained domestic investment.
