According to market intelligence firm Cleanview, the US currently operates 1,298 data centers with a combined capacity of 61,560 megawatts. The 2,142 planned projects would add 380,312 MW, representing a nearly sevenfold increase in total power capacity. Texas is emerging as the primary hub of this expansion with a projected capacity of 75 to 100 GW. The trend toward on-site self-generated power is accelerating, with approximately 59 behind-the-meter projects totaling around 90 GW, of which 92% were announced since early 2025, exemplified by xAI’s Colossus sites near Memphis, Tennessee, which operate roughly 1.5 GW of mobile gas turbines.
