Mastercard launched on Thursday a payment option allowing consumers to give an AI agent a virtual card to make online purchases without prior approval for each transaction. Competitors Visa and Meta have also developed their own AI shopping and payment solutions. According to a study commissioned by ACI Worldwide, only 7% of U.S. and U.K. consumers surveyed would allow an AI to make purchases without their approval, and more than half said they were uncomfortable with the technology. Mastercard has implemented a digital trail called Verifiable Intent to document authorizations given to shopping agents and attempt to resolve disputes if something goes wrong.
