Anthropic released Claude Code version 2.1.277 on September 18, introducing native support for AGENTS.md files. This update allows Claude Code to automatically read an AGENTS.md file when no CLAUDE.md is present in a project, eliminating the need for workarounds like symlinks. Over 60,000 repositories now use the AGENTS.md format, which is also supported by OpenAI Codex, GitHub Copilot, and Gemini CLI. Claude Code was the only major player that had not yet adopted this cross-tool standard. Users on Bedrock, Vertex, and Foundry platforms do not yet have access to this feature.
