Macron considers options to release strategic energy reserves as French fuel shortages worsen

French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France is weighing the release of strategic energy reserves as part of a coordinated G7 action. More than 11% of French service stations are currently experiencing stockouts of at least one fuel type. France holds 15 to 17 million tonnes of strategic oil reserves, sufficient to cover approximately 118 days of net imports. In March 2026, G7 countries had already released up to 400 million barrels of strategic oil in partnership with the International Energy Agency, with France’s contribution amounting to roughly 14.5 million barrels.
