An Equinix data center leaked 5,000 gallons of diesel in Secaucus, New Jersey, last week. The spill, which flowed into an unnamed tributary of the Hackensack River before being contained, represents the largest data center-related spill in the state, nearly three times more severe than the previous incident in 2022. Approximately 3,500 gallons have been recovered since cleanup operations began. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection confirmed no impact on local wildlife or drinking water intakes was observed. According to an AP-NORC poll, 53% of Americans are concerned about the environmental impacts of AI, a higher percentage than for air travel, crypto, or meat production.
