Trump derides EU’s Canada membership proposal as laughable, threatens tariffs

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed granting Canada an unprecedented associate membership status within the EU, covering defense, technology, energy, and cybersecurity cooperation. Donald Trump immediately called the proposal « laughable » and threatened heavy tariffs or trade restrictions. Approximately 70% of Canadian exports flow to the United States, and US tariffs on Canadian goods have reached as high as 50% on certain products. The proposal would require approval from all EU member states and faces significant institutional challenges, as the EU has no existing framework for such an arrangement.
