Elon Musk announced on September 14 that Grok 5, xAI’s next major model, would be the version to reach artificial general intelligence (AGI). Grok 4.8, a 2.5-trillion-parameter model built on a new C++ software stack, finishes training this week before moving to reinforcement learning. Musk also clarified that Grok 4.7 performs roughly on par with Anthropic Opus 5.0, while Grok 4.9 would likely reach Astra or Fable-class performance. xAI has been aggressively scaling since launch, combining massive compute clusters with distinctive data sources including real-time information from X and specialized engineering knowledge from SpaceX.
