Former Anthropic researcher calls for global coordination on AI risks

Jacob Coxon, 27, resigned from Anthropic on September 8, 2026, after three years working on frontier models at OpenAI and Anthropic. He publicly accused both companies of prioritizing development speed over human safety, warning of potential catastrophic outcomes by the end of the decade. Coxon appeared on NBC News on September 13 to call for global coordination between AI labs and governments before technology outpaces governance capabilities. Evan Hubinger, Anthropic’s alignment science lead, acknowledged the company lacks a clear strategy for solving superintelligence alignment problems, publicly estimating a greater than 10% probability that AI could lead to human eradication within the next decade. Anthropic is pursuing an IPO that could value the company at up to $2 trillion.
