German authorities have identified two suspects linked to Russian military intelligence (GRU) in connection with a failed drone attack on a Ukrainian cargo plane at Leipzig/Halle Airport on the night of August 4-5. The drone, loaded with approximately 1.8 kg of Semtex and PETN, struck the aircraft but failed to detonate, providing investigators with intact forensic evidence including DNA and explosive residue. The suspects are a Russian national traveling on a Latvian passport and a Belarusian national holding a Russian passport, both described as low-level operatives. In retaliation, Germany announced the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and called for additional sanctions against Russia.
