Peter Levin, founder of Griffin Gaming Partners, claims that Pokemon cards would become the global currency in the event of a worldwide economic collapse. The collectible card market is valued at 50 billion dollars per year, with returns of 3,821% since 2004, far outpacing the S&P 500 over the same period. Influencer Logan Paul resold a Pikachu Illustrator card for approximately 16 million dollars, setting a world record. Japan, the birthplace of Pokemon, is now considering regulation of this market due to concerns over counterfeiting and money laundering, while a first edition Charizard PSA 10 lost over 55% of its value between early 2022 and mid-2023.
