Mexico expands hunt for illegal crypto mines

Mexico is stepping up its hunt for illegal crypto mines to reduce large-scale electricity theft. Authorities in Puebla dismantled a dam-powered operation using 300 computers that illegally tapped electricity from the Nuevo Necaxa dam to mine cryptocurrencies. Puebla’s Public Security Secretary Francisco Sánchez noted that this activity consumes significant energy and generates noise, prompting operators to seek isolated locations. Authorities suspect the operation may have been used to launder proceeds from other illegal activities. Additionally, the murder of Mexican keyboardist Jonathan Meléndez, his pregnant wife, and their three-year-old daughter is believed linked to a bitcoin stash the killers thought was worth millions of dollars.
