Germany’s exports decline for first time in five months as China demand craters

German exports fell 0.8% in July 2026, ending a five-month growth streak and dropping to 138.2 billion euros. This decline was largely driven by China, where shipments plummeted 9.5% in a single month to 5.6 billion euros. Sales to the euro area also contracted by 2.8% to 53.9 billion euros. The sole bright spot was the United States, which absorbed 14.4 billion euros in German goods, up 19.1% month-on-month. This contraction marks Germany’s first export decline since January 2026, and weakness in both Chinese and eurozone demand raises questions about the country’s economic vitality.
