Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei has ordered officials to avoid harming social cohesion as the country’s economy crumbles under U.S. sanctions. The rial has crashed to 2.2 million per dollar from about 1 million a year ago, while inflation has soared above 80% with food prices up 100%. President Pezeshkian acknowledged Iranian trade has fallen 25% to 35% and the country has only two months of gasoline supplies left. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced an economic D-Day to shut down remaining sanctions evasion routes, and senior Iranian sources say the U.S. blockade is becoming increasingly difficult to withstand.
