US envoys head to Kyiv after three-hour Putin meeting as 72-hour ceasefire takes hold

Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, special envoys from the Trump administration, sat across from Vladimir Putin for roughly three hours at the Kremlin on September 5 before heading to Kyiv. Their first visit to the Ukrainian capital since the launch of the US mediation effort comes as Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a temporary 72-hour ceasefire. They are set to meet President Zelensky on September 6 to present a proposal aimed at breaking the stalled negotiations. The main sticking points remain territorial disputes and security guarantees, with Russia still controlling significant portions of Ukrainian territory seized since the February 2022 invasion.
