US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed striking and sinking the Iranian oil tanker M/T Kylo in the Gulf of Oman on September 5, 2026. The Kylo was one of three Iranian tankers targeted, with the other two permanently disabled but still afloat. The strikes were framed as retaliation for IRGC missile attacks targeting two US Navy warships in the region. All three vessels were part of Iran’s multi-billion dollar shadow fleet linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The Kylo was unladen at the time of the strike, preventing an oil spill. War risk premiums for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz are expected to rise following the incident.
