India’s June quarter GDP print is courting controversy. Here’s why

Share

India announced 7.8% growth for the June quarter, making it the world’s fastest-growing major economy, but the figures are under scrutiny. Former finance secretary Subhash Chandra Garg claims that Q2 2025 GDP was lowered by 6 trillion rupees to make the year-over-year comparison more favorable, while the Congress party alleges a 43 lakh crore rupee revision over four years. The government’s chief economic advisor called this a case of « cherry-picking » and explained that the change in base year and methodology accounts for the statistical adjustments. The IMF had previously expressed concerns about the accuracy of Indian economic data, giving it a « C grade, » and experts note that official figures often do not match ground-level reality. Major banks Morgan Stanley and Citi still forecast 7.3% growth for fiscal year 2026-2027.
