Nvidia has reached an agreement to acquire the platform Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, one of the largest acquisitions in its history. Founded in 2016 by three French entrepreneurs, this company dubbed the ‘GitHub of artificial intelligence’ hosts over 3 million models, 500,000 datasets and 1 million applications, serving more than 18 million developers and 200,000 companies. This valuation represents a sharp increase from the $4.5 billion valuation during the last funding round in 2023, when Nvidia was already an investor alongside Amazon, Google and Salesforce. The company has committed to keeping the platform open to competitors, without making Nvidia chips mandatory for creating or deploying models. If the deal closes, Nvidia will control both a significant share of the computing power used to train AI systems and one of the main platforms for distributing their models.
