The US Mint released a 1-dollar coin featuring Donald Trump on September 2, available in bags of 100 pieces for 154.50 dollars or rolls of 25 pieces for 61 dollars, all minted in Philadelphia. This is not an absolute first: in 1926, a half-dollar already depicted President Calvin Coolidge in office, silhouetted behind George Washington’s bust, before 860,000 of the one million pieces produced were sent back to the melting pot. The legal arrangement relies on a 2020 law signed by Trump during his first term, which only prohibits portraits of living persons on the reverse side. The TRUMP memecoin, for its part, remains bruised: it trades around 2.20 dollars with a market cap of approximately 585 million dollars, while cumulative holder losses had already exceeded 3.8 billion dollars by the end of June according to Nansen.
