The new filings escalate the claims from negligence to aiding and abetting and now target personally Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s head of global affairs, alongside CEO Sam Altman and the company. Plaintiffs are seeking over $1 billion in combined damages. The core allegation accuses OpenAI of ignoring a warning from its own safety team, which flagged shooter Jesse Van Rootselaar’s ChatGPT account for violent content back in June 2025, months before the attack. The litigation aims to establish precedent holding AI companies liable when their internal safety mechanisms are deliberately bypassed.
