South Korea and Japan push for $6 trillion economic bloc centered on AI and chips

South Korea and Japan proposed creating a combined 6 trillion dollar economic bloc focused on AI, semiconductors, and critical minerals during their 15th joint chamber of commerce meeting in Sendai. KCCI Chairman Chey Tae-won presented proposals including AI data sharing, cross-border startup investments, and a pilot project for passport-free travel between major airports. Both nations committed to cooperating on critical minerals and energy security through stockpiling arrangements and swap mechanisms for crude oil and liquefied natural gas. SK hynix, one of the world’s largest memory chip manufacturers, and Japanese chipmaking equipment suppliers are expected to benefit from this integration.
