Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI on July 10, 2026, in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, alleging trade secret misappropriation and breach of contract. The company accuses former engineer Chang Liu of using a confidential Apple schematic in his work at OpenAI, and of downloading over 1,000 pages of confidential files through an authentication bug after leaving Apple on January 22, 2026. Apple claims OpenAI is destroying evidence relevant to the case and that over 400 former Apple employees now work at its competitor. Tang Yew Tan, formerly Apple’s VP of product design, now serves as OpenAI’s chief hardware officer.
