The newspaper’s investigation revealed that a state agency steered at least $30 million toward building Flock’s network, including at least 3,200 cameras installed since 2023, much of it funded by a $1 auto-insurance fee meant to combat catalytic converter theft. Abbott cited an ongoing crackdown after abuse cases, including a Lufkin officer facing 100 counts for allegedly surveilling 11 people illegally. Opposition has grown into a bipartisan revolt, with Senator Bernie Sanders vowing to introduce federal legislation to halt what he called AI mass surveillance.
