The maintainer of Bitcoin HWI (Hardware Wallet Interface), the widely used bridge connecting wallet software to hardware signing devices, announced on Aug. 18 that the project would stop accepting new devices or features beyond MuSig2 work, effectively signaling retirement. This decision affects a critical component used by Bitcoin Core, Specter Desktop, Wasabi Wallet, BTCPay Server and others to communicate with devices from Ledger, Trezor, Coldcard, BitBox and Jade. BHWI, the named successor built in Rust, has parity tests covering four device families but no confirmed production deployment by any wallet team. Downstream projects must now decide whether to package BHWI, maintain forks, adopt alternative interfaces or leave certain device combinations unsupported, with no normal path to contribute changes back to a shared upstream.
