Meta agreed to pay approximately $17 billion to settle with 52 U.S. attorneys general who alleged the company knowingly designed harmful and addictive products for children on Facebook and Instagram. The settlement requires Meta to implement new safeguards for users under 18, including a two-hour daily usage limit, nighttime access restrictions between midnight and 6 a.m., and tools to disable autoplay features. The payment will be distributed annually over a decade, with an independent research foundation and auditor overseeing Meta’s compliance.
