The $37 Billion Tokenization Boom Has an Ownership Problem

Tokenized real-world assets reached $37.29 billion on public blockchains as of August 3, with Treasury and money-market products accounting for $16.16 billion, roughly 43% of the total. The SEC divided tokenized securities in January between issuer-sponsored products and third-party-created versions, a distinction that determines whether the token represents actual legal ownership or a separate entitlement. Institutional players like Securitize listed its common stock on the NYSE under the ticker SECZ in July, illustrating the entry of tokenized securities into regulated public-market venues. Challenges persist: clearing and compliance systems operate according to schedules built around market opening hours, while tokenization aims for around-the-clock trading and 24/7 settlement.
