OpenAI plans to build an artificial general intelligence system by December 31, 2026, according to a TIME interview with CEO Sam Altman. Research Director Mark Chen stated the company is 80% of the way there. This ambition relies on Astra, a model designed to coordinate up to 16 AI agents simultaneously, capable of solving advanced mathematical problems and navigating desktop software at superhuman speed. Astra has already solved 10 previously unsolved theoretical computer science problems. Prediction markets remain skeptical, assigning only a 9% to 25% probability of an AGI announcement by year-end and 50% to 55% by 2030.
