Ethereum’s Next Upgrade Could Change How Fast It Can Really Go

Ethereum’s next major upgrade, called Glamsterdam and planned for Q4 2026, aims to raise the gas limit to around 200 million from 60 million today. This upgrade includes several technical changes such as block-level access lists, enshrined proposer-builder separation and state-growth controls, designed to increase processing capacity without pricing out validators running ordinary hardware. Ethereum already doubled its gas limit in early 2025. With approximately 7,600 monthly active developers, Ethereum retains a substantial lead over Solana (2,300), but faces growing competition from high-performance chains in decentralized exchanges and consumer applications.
