Pavel Durov, founder and CEO of Telegram, has defended his platform against accusations that it hosts criminal content. He claims the narrative is a coordinated punishment for refusing governments’ political censorship requests. In France, he was arrested on August 24, 2024, held for four days, and indicted on charges including organized crime. In Russia, the FSB charged him with facilitating terrorism on July 29 and issued an international arrest warrant. Durov states that Telegram removes between 15 and 20 million accounts and close to 2 million channels and groups on a monthly basis.
