Tesla has officially ended its Solar Roof project six years after Elon Musk predicted it would be installing 1,000 units per week. The company installed only 3,000 Solar Roofs in total, with a peak of 32 units per week, far below the 345,000 it should have deployed to meet Musk’s targets. Tesla acquired SolarCity for $2.6 billion in 2016 and received over $750 million in government subsidies for its Buffalo, New York manufacturing plant. An internal review concluded the product was « not financially viable, » with no press release accompanying the shutdown. Tesla has since replaced Solar Roof with conventional solar panels.
