Samsung Electronics shares skid as record shareholder returns disappoint

Samsung Electronics shares dropped 8% to 9% on August 24, 2026, just days after the company announced a shareholder return plan of 90 to 110 trillion won, roughly $65 to $80 billion, setting a new Korean corporate record. While the figure represents a fivefold increase over the previous record of 20.3 trillion won set in 2020, it fell short of the 150 trillion won investors had been anticipating. Two key disappointments fueled the sell-off: Samsung kept its payout ratio unchanged at 50% of free cash flow and provided no commitment to immediate treasury share cancellations, unlike rival SK Hynix which announced a 40 trillion won buyback program explicitly including share cancellations.
