Hui Ka Yan, founder of China Evergrande Group, was sentenced to life imprisonment on August 20 by the Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court on charges of financial fraud, illegal fundraising, and bribery. The court also confiscated all his personal property, stripped him of political rights for life, and imposed fines totaling 8.82 billion yuan (approximately $1.3 billion), while his subsidiary Hengda Real Estate was penalized an additional 7 billion yuan. His fortune, estimated at $45 billion in 2017, evaporated as his company defaulted on approximately $300 billion in liabilities in 2021. A total of 56 individuals connected to Evergrande received prison sentences ranging from 22 months to 18 years, with a Hong Kong court ordering the company’s liquidation in 2024.
