Canada demand for trucks tariff relief imperiled trade talks

Trade negotiations between the United States and Canada collapsed on Friday due to a last-minute disagreement over US tariff relief on medium- and heavy-duty vehicles from Canada. A deal had been outlined to lower US automotive tariffs from 25% to 15%, but Canada demanded that relief be extended to large pickup trucks and commercial vehicles. The United States considered this an additional demand not part of the original agreement, and subsequently imposed new 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. Canada responded with dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs effective September 8.
