14.9 billion SAND tokens minted after Sandbox exploit: Report

Web3 gaming project The Sandbox suffered a cross-chain bridge exploit affecting SAND tokens on Base and BNB Smart Chain networks. The attacker minted 14.9 billion unbacked SAND tokens worth approximately $718 million. The project team said it identified and contained the vulnerability, adding that SAND tokens on Ethereum and Polygon are not affected and no user wallets were compromised. SAND price dropped 5% following the announcement. The exploit is part of a broader trend where nearly $1.6 billion has been lost to crypto exploits since the start of the year.
