OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman details shift from nonprofit model

Greg Brockman, co-founder of OpenAI, testified during Elon Musk’s lawsuit against Sam Altman and OpenAI in May 2026, revealing a personal stake valued at nearly $30 billion. In December 2024, OpenAI announced its conversion to a Delaware public benefit corporation, abandoning the capped-profit model created in 2019. This restructuring removes the return ceiling for investors, making the company more attractive to institutional capital. OpenAI now operates under a dual structure with a nonprofit foundation overseeing the OpenAI Group public benefit corporation. The original $1 billion pledge made in 2015 was never fully realized.
