Berkshire Hathaway makes backdoor investment in SpaceX through Alphabet holdings

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway holds an indirect stake in SpaceX worth approximately $700 million, acquired entirely through its position in Alphabet, Google’s parent company. This exposure results from Berkshire’s 0.9% stake in Alphabet, which itself owns roughly 4% of SpaceX, a position valued at around $94 billion. Alphabet’s initial 2015 investment in SpaceX of approximately $900 million generated a return multiple of about 100 times over eleven years. Berkshire also expanded its Alphabet position by 83%, accumulating nearly 106 million shares, making Alphabet its third-largest equity holding after Apple and American Express. SpaceX completed its IPO on June 12, 2026.
