Mark Carney outlines retaliatory import taxes on key sectors as US-Canada trade talks collapse

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on August 22 that Ottawa will impose retaliatory import taxes targeting steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics, matching US tariffs « dollar for dollar. » Washington implemented a 50% tariff on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian exports, covering about 5% of Canada’s total shipments south of the border. Negotiations collapsed after the US introduced last-minute changes the Canadian side deemed « unfair and non-economic, » prompting Ottawa to suspend discussions and recall its negotiators. Carney also signaled that support measures for Canadian workers and businesses affected by the tariff fallout are on the way.
