Canada’s PM Carney announces retaliatory measures against US effective September 8

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has suspended trade negotiations with Washington and announced retaliatory measures set to take effect on September 8. The measures come in response to the US imposing 50% tariffs on roughly $28 billion worth of Canadian exports, effective around August 21. Ottawa plans to match those tariffs dollar for dollar and is deploying a $5 billion fund to support affected businesses, primarily in dairy, alcohol, and automotive sectors, plus $80 million in regional funding for Atlantic Canada. Canada had initially rolled back some existing 25% retaliatory tariffs on September 1 before announcing the new package one week later. Automotive supply chains are particularly vulnerable as parts cross the border multiple times during assembly, potentially triggering tariff costs at each crossing.
