Mexico anticipates trade outcomes similar to US-Canada deal as USMCA splinters into bilateral tracks

Mexico’s Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard stated that Mexico expects to secure trade terms comparable to those being negotiated between the United States and Canada. The United States decided on July 1, 2026, not to renew the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) in its current form, opting instead for separate bilateral negotiations with each partner. The USMCA governed roughly $2 trillion in trilateral trade since it took effect on July 1, 2020. Canada moved first, advancing negotiations with Washington ahead of an August 19, 2026 tariff deadline, creating a benchmark that Mexico now seeks to match or exceed. The shift from trilateral to bilateral negotiations changes the power dynamics by allowing the United States to negotiate separately with each partner, eliminating the ability for Mexico and Canada to coordinate their positions.
