Brazil invests $444M to enhance AI ecosystem and supercomputing

Brazil has invested 2.3 billion reais (approximately $444 million) in AI infrastructure, split between two supercomputing projects in the states of Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Norte. The Rio de Janeiro project, worth 1.3 billion reais, will be developed with Chinese companies Huawei and iFlytek for training large language models, with a planned start in July 2027. The Rio Grande do Norte project, valued at approximately 1 billion reais, aims to acquire a supercomputer ranked among the world’s top 10 in AI processing power, with Nvidia as the frontrunner for the contract. These initiatives are part of President Lula’s strategy to strengthen Brazil’s technological sovereignty and reduce dependence on single-country technology suppliers.
