CoinGecko’s seven-year study titled « Trading Majors vs. Altcoins : Ethereum DEX Trader Profitability, 2020-2026 » analyzing on-chain data reveals that altcoin traders posted median profit-and-loss outcomes between 3 and 6.6 times larger than traders who stuck to the top 10 tokens by market cap. In 2021, the best year for both groups, altcoin traders achieved a median PnL of $2,016.02 versus $339.21 for majors traders, roughly six times larger. The overall median win rate for all active Ethereum DEX traders dropped to a record low of 26.29% in the twelve months ending August 2026, meaning roughly three out of four traders are losing money. Total realized PnL across both cohorts turned negative at -$3.30 billion by August 2026, and the altcoin trading population had shrunk to just 7.22% of total Ethereum DEX traders by 2024 before a modest recovery to 10.82% by 2026.
