Market warns US Treasury’s debt strategy may raise borrowing costs

The yield on 30-year US Treasury bonds reached approximately 5.3% in August, a level not seen since 2007. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on August 19 the doubling of bond buyback operations, from $2 billion to $4 billion per operation, from September 9 through November 4. Analysts believe this measure remains insufficient given public debt exceeding $40 trillion and annual interest costs surpassing $1.2 trillion. Observers warn against a vicious cycle where increasing borrowing costs worsen deficits and require more borrowing, which could intensify pressure on yields.
