Hui Ka Yan, founder of China Evergrande Group, was sentenced to life in prison on August 20 by the Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court. He pleaded guilty to eight charges including large-scale financial fraud, fundraising fraud, and bribery. The court also revoked his political rights for life and ordered asset confiscation, while fines totaling approximately $2.35 billion were imposed on the group and one of its subsidiaries. Evergrande, which defaulted in 2021 with $300 billion in liabilities, one of the largest corporate debt crises in history, saw other executives receive sentences ranging from six to eighteen years in prison.
