Amazon announced in late 2025 plans to expand drone delivery to nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by year-end, a sixfold increase in its network potentially covering tens of millions of customers. This marks a major step forward after years of struggles to fulfill Jeff Bezos’ original 2013 vision presented during a 60 Minutes appearance. The drones, capable of delivering packages weighing up to five pounds within 30 minutes, currently operate in about a dozen zones including San Antonio, Baton Rouge, and Kansas City, expanding to Chicago, Syracuse, Cleveland, and Atlanta regions. The company delivered hundreds of thousands of packages by drone this year, a modest figure compared to the nearly 20 million packages it delivers daily in the United States. Amazon faces intensifying competition from Walmart, which alongside Alphabet is developing drone delivery aiming to reach over 40 million American customers by 2027.
