Four US states (California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey) have sued Meta in federal court in Oakland, California, accusing the company of deliberately designing Instagram and Facebook with addictive features to hook children and teenagers. The plaintiffs allege Meta violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by collecting data on users under 13 and concealing known mental health risks. Penalties sought are estimated between $200 billion and $1.4 trillion. The trial, which began on August 18 and is expected to last four to six weeks, is a bellwether case that could shape hundreds of related claims. Mark Zuckerberg is scheduled to testify.
