Alibaba reclaims status as top Chinese tech stock amid AI bets

Alibaba has reclaimed its position as the most popular Chinese tech stock among investors, fueled by a massive 53 billion dollar investment over three years in artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure. In February 2025, the group announced a plan to invest at least 380 billion yuan, approximately 53 billion dollars, for fiscal years 2026 through 2028, described as China’s largest private-sector computing project. The Qwen family of large language models, including Qwen3.8-Max previewed in August 2026 with 2.4 trillion parameters, positions Alibaba as a credible rival to OpenAI, Google and Meta. Cloud revenue surged 38% in one quarter, and shares climbed nearly 50% on the Hang Seng Tech Index by September 2025, reaching nearly 109 dollars in July 2026. Key risks remain execution challenges, international competition and US-China tech tensions, particularly export controls on advanced semiconductors.
