Ana Botín has led Santander since 2014, succeeding her father Emilio at the helm of one of Europe’s largest banks. The Spanish lender now serves over 170 million customers, surpassing JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America. Last year, Santander reported record profits of 12.6 billion euros, up 14% from 2023, alongside plans to return 10 billion euros to investors through share buybacks over two years. The bank’s market capitalization exceeded 100 billion euros, making it the first European Union bank to cross that threshold in the last decade. Botín, one of the most celebrated female leaders in Europe’s financial sector, describes her demanding role as requiring the discipline of an Olympic athlete.
