Howard Webb calls FIFA’s Balogun red card reversal ‘not helpful’ as referee trust erodes

Howard Webb, head of the PGMOL, strongly criticized FIFA’s decision to overturn Folarin Balogun’s red card at the 2026 World Cup. The US striker, sent off for stepping on an opponent’s ankle during a 2-0 round-of-32 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, was cleared to play against Belgium using Article 27, a provision never previously invoked at a World Cup finals. The decision, linked to a phone call between Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, has raised concerns about refereeing integrity and fueled conspiracy theories. Premier League CEO Richard Masters also condemned the move and called for a reevaluation of FIFA’s appeal processes.
