Tesla requested 5,000 permits to operate robotaxis in Las Vegas, but the Nevada Transportation Authority granted only 10, capping speed at 45 mph and banning passenger pickups within a quarter mile of the airport. Vehicles must be labeled « Robotaxi » and require human supervision, contrasting with Tesla’s operations in Austin where no safety monitor is present in the vehicle. The company is investing $3.1 million in a 37,000-square-foot building in the Las Vegas valley, while Amazon’s Zoox already operates 100 vehicles on the Strip with over 3 million miles logged and nearly one million passengers carried. Clark County, directly impacted by these operations, has no formal role in permit approvals and is seeking clarity on how to best facilitate such activities going forward.
